Foraging Spades
Below is what I've collected on various small or folding shovels usable on a foraging trip.
- The NATO approved folding spade. Made by Fiskars in Finland. Highly engineered combination of nylon and steel creates a light and strong spade. Nylon sheath included. Weight: Spade: 2 lb 4 oz, Sheath: 3 oz. US$57.60 (plus $5 shipping)
- Wildman Steve Brill carries a small shovel in a leather sheath when he gives his foraging tours. The The Special Forces Shovel by Cold Steel is modeled after the original Soviet Spetsnaz shovel. It is for sale in a mall (the same mall as the above spade) in two places: The spade for sale at
$17.59. And its sheath for
sale at $15.96. (Combined with shipping: $38.55). Weight: Spade: 1 lb 10.5 oz, Sheath (without belt): 6.5 oz.
- There are two spades pictured in the Cabela's Spring 1999 catalog.
The first one, the Glock Folding Shovel/Saw Combo is for $44.99. No one has any experience with the first. The second one for $9.99 is not strong enough to use.
- This is a
$13.99 one that looks about the same as the $9.99 one at Cabela's.
Not recommended either.
